The Benefits of Group Singing
Blog post by Brianna DeSantis, vocal instructor & coach
Group singing provides so many benefits for all ages, but especially for young singers. Singing in a group has always been one of my passions. Whether it be in a choir or in an ensemble on stage, something happens when a group sings as one unit. There’s a sense of satisfaction and community that you don’t quite get from solo singing. Working towards a common goal and then achieving that goal is highly rewarding for group members who take as much pleasure in the success of others as for themselves. Through music, the group becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
Since September, I have had the privilege of directing such a group – Sonata Piano Studio’s newest ensemble, Sonata Singers. Though we’ve only been together a short time, I can already see the benefits of musical collaboration and cooperation in the students’ demeanor, outlook, and social relationships. In addition to these, research also touts other benefits of group singing:
- Increased self-confidence and empowerment
- A sense of joy and accomplishment
- Lowered feelings of isolation
- Stronger friendships
With everything that’s happened since March 2020, there has never been a better time for the healing powers of group singing.
