Why is Music Important in Early Childhood?

Research in recent years has shown that music has a positive impact on infants and young children. Some of these benefits are:

  • Development fine and gross motor skills including hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness
  • Communication and self expression through the use of musical instruments
  • Social skill development including taking turns, dancing, fostering a sense of belonging
  • Bonding through singing, moving, and having fun with caregivers or others with close relationships
  • Fun! Experiencing positive emotions like joy, excitement, and affection while participating in live music making

When Should I Start Teaching My Baby Music?

It is never too soon to introduce your child to music. In fact, music has many benefits for babies including developing and strengthening the connections between both brain hemispheres, improved mood, increased vocabulary, better concentration, and more! Our Parent & Tot classes are available for children age 3 months or older.

When Should I Introduce My Child to Instruments?

Making music can begin at any age, however 5 years old is the best time to start private lessons. Our Preschool piano and preschool voice programs, Little Sonatinas, are designed to aid the transition at 4-5 years old into private music lessons. These classes introduce basic concepts such as rhythm, tempo, dynamics, as well as music-making experience to provide a strong foundation for 1-on-1 lessons.

How Does Music Affect a Child's Development?

Music making provides children a multi-sensory experience which can improve learning capabilities, focus, planning, pattern recognition, language acquisition, and reading skills. These are especially helpful to develop before starting kindergarten or preschool where children require these skills to continue their education.
